Security
Your BrightLocal API key is like a password to your data. Only enter it into trusted platforms (ChatGPT and Claude via official interfaces are fine). Never share it publicly. If you suspect it was compromised, regenerate a new one via BrightLocal support.
Data Scope
The AI can only fetch data that BrightLocal’s API provides. That typically includes your report metrics, listings information, reviews, etc. It will not have access to things like your BrightLocal login or settings. It cannot change anything within your BrightLocal account – the integration is read-only.
Understanding AI Responses
When the AI answers using BrightLocal data, it sometimes will cite the data or refer to it. For example, ChatGPT might say, “According to BrightLocal, your average rating is 4.3.” If something seems off, you can double-check by looking at your BrightLocal dashboard. AI might occasionally misinterpret data (especially if asked to do complex analysis). Use these responses as helpful guidance, but keep an eye on correctness for critical decisions.
Combining multiple connectors
If you have other connectors (for example, maybe you also connect another service’s data), be clear in your prompt which data you want. The AI will try to infer, but you can specify: “Using BrightLocal…” to direct the queries.
Privacy
If you use these features with client data, ensure you have the right to expose that data to a third-party AI service. While OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude) are reputable, you should treat any AI platform as you would any software – they will process your data to give answers. Review data usage policies; OpenAI, for instance, doesn’t use your data to train models if you’re a paying API user or Plus user as of their policy, but it’s good to stay updated on this.
By following the above steps, you’ll have ChatGPT or Claude set up to work hand-in-hand with your BrightLocal account. This allows you to conversationally dig into your local SEO performance and get intelligent answers quickly.
