A low Local AI Visibility score is almost always traceable to one of two underlying causes, and both are things you can act on directly inside BrightLocal.
Rather than treating your score as a fixed number to worry about, think of it as a starting point: the two checks below will usually tell you exactly what's pulling it down and what to fix first.
A citation gap
A source that AI platforms are citing frequently, where your business isn't listed.
AI platforms build their answers from what other websites say about businesses in your area on directories, review sites, and local publications. If a source is being cited often by AI platforms but your business isn't listed there, that's a real, measurable gap in your visibility.
Review ‘AI sources’ and check if you are listed on those directories and that your information there is up to date. If not, you may want to consider creating or updating listings there.
An unfavorable prompt result
A specific prompt where you're either not mentioned, or ranked behind your competitors.
Because your overall score is an average across everything being tracked, a handful of weak results can drag it down even if you're doing well elsewhere.
Review ‘Prompts’ and look for the ones with a low visibility score or a poor average position, these are the specific questions where you're either missing from the answer altogether or being mentioned well behind competitors who are winning that particular search.
Once you've found the weak prompts, it's worth asking why: is it a wording customers actually use that you haven't optimized for elsewhere, or a topic like a specific service or offer where your competitors simply have stronger, more citable information available?
