Citation Tracker uses a variety of sources and an algorithm we have created to match citations for a business. I highly recommend this guide which explains this in detail: How are citations found and checked in Citation Tracker reports?
Because of the way the search engines index sites, there are cases where a site feeds us back a match that Citation Tracker flags as a duplicate. However, upon closer inspection, you will notice that many of these "duplicate sites" are actually links within the same listing. You may have one link to the actual page and then another link to a photo or other details.
There are other instances where Google might have an old link indexed, but that link actually redirects to the current active listing. Yelp is a great example of this, as they merge all listings once one of them has been verified.
For example, the following three links all redirect to the same URL:
- https://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/brightlocal-lewes
- http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/bright-local-seo-london
In both cases, we know that these are not truly duplicates, but it is difficult for our automated Citation Tracker tool to recognize these nuances. For this reason, we have included useful tools within Citation Tracker that enable you to manage and clean up your reports:
- Update citations: you can update/swap a citation by clicking on the three dots to reveal the Citation Information button next to each citation. There you can dismiss unnecessary duplicates and leave yourself or colleagues notes.
- Delete citations: you can remove citations by clicking the bin icon next to each citation.
